During the Second World War the U.S. Navy deployed a large amount of three types of motor torpedo boats: the Higgins measuring 78 feet and ELCO measuring 77 and 80 feet. They were easily distinguishable from each by their lengths, configuration, and various details such as weapons. The most produced were in classes of the 80 foot ELCOs. These were realised in five series for a total of about 300 examples. Built in mahogany and pushed by three 1,350cv Packard 4M-2500 engines (taken to 1,500 in the latest series), these vessels easily exceeded 40 knots. The equipment and weapons were continuously updated and improved thanks to experience acquired in the field and the progressive change of it’s role. With the progression of the conflicts, the PT Boat’s original task of attacking and cutting off traffic became the role of gunship and operated in the proximity of the coast or in channels. This 1:35 scale model kit reproduces the PT 596 and an 80-foot ELCO from the last production run. It comes in an impressively large box at 735 X 471 X 103 mm and includes 322 parts. In the box you will find the six parts trees and the one-piece hull. Also includes a fret of photo-etch parts, two turned aluminum barrels for the main armament, a sheet of pre-cut acetate windows, a section of wire and two lengths of thread for different rigging details, a bag of screws to help mount the main deck to that one-piece hull, waterslide decals and decals for one version: PT-596, RON 39, Samar, Philippines, 1945. Also available and sold separately is Italeri's item 5606 which is the ELCO 80' boat crew.
